En el Candombe existen dos estilos claramente definidos, conocidos como "Cuareim" y "Ansina". Sus nombres surgen de las calles de los barrios montevideanos Sur y Palermo, cuna de las más importantes comparsas del carnaval.El estilo Cuareim, el más tradicional, es tocado a un tempo moderado donde el ritmo se arma con los tambores pianos que alternan sutiles variaciones entre los fraseos de los tambores repiques.El estilo Ansina es tocado a un tempo más rápido que el anterior, y en su juego rítmico los tambores pianos combinan golpes repicados, contestando (dialogando) a los tambores repiques.
Una "cuerda mínima" está integrada por un tambor chico, un tambor repique y un tambor piano. Cuanto mayor es el número de tambores en la cuerda, mayor es la formación de tambores chicos y tambores pianos (formadores del ritmo), que de tambores Repiques (improvisadores).Como ejemplo observamos que una cuerda de siete tambores está formada por tres tambores chicos, dos tambores pianos y dos tambores repiques, con el objetivo de mantener siempre un equilibrio entre los tambores formadores del ritmo y los improvisadores.
